Arbovirus Information Web Site

On this web site you can find out about mosquitoes, animals and people that have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV) or eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus in your city or town.  The State Laboratory Institute performs testing for WNV and EEE in mosquitoes each summer and testing for virus infection in animal and human specimens year-round.  Collection and testing of mosquitoes for the 2010 WNV and EEE season will begin in mid-June.

WHAT ARE RISK MAPS?

The maps below show areas of predicted risk for human disease from WNV or EEE.  The risk areas change over time, so please check each week for the most up-to-date information.  Predictions of risk are based on a number of different factors including weather, current and past instances of human or animal disease, mosquito habitat, recent findings of virus in mosquitoes and estimates of mosquito population levels.  Click on each map below to see a larger version of the map.

IMPORTANT LIMITATIONS TO THESE PREDICTIONS

You may notice that some risk areas are labeled "low" or "remote."  This does not mean that these areas are safe or risk-free.  Infections can occur anywhere, even in areas of low or remote risk.  Therefore, people in all locations are advised to take precautionary measures to protect themselves and their loved ones from mosquito-borne disease throughout the summer and fall mosquito season.  For more information about how to protect yourself from mosquito-borne disease, please see the MDPH booklet Preventing Diseases Spread by Mosquitoes.
